The Internet is constantly evolving. Even the most popular social media platforms have changed along with their audiences and competition. Also, the world is transitioning to using the Internet for fundamental parts of life, such as paying bills or conducting business meetings. People have been forecasting the future of media for many years. For example, Nikola Tesla predicted video chatting in 1926. Furthermore, future innovations can only come to fruition through visualization and prediction. For instance, many speculate on the next stage of the internet and how artificial intelligence and immersive technology will change the way social media is used in the future.
The Internet
Web3
What would you say if I were to tell you we use the second stage of the Internet, also known as Web 2.0? When the Internet was created in 1994, the Internet was not interactable and contained read-only content. In 2004, the Internet as we know it began to develop. Today, we can interact with web pages and collaborate. Currently, the next stage of the Internet is being predicted. The Future of the World Wide Web is expected to decentralize the digital environment through blockchain technology, also known as Web 3.0 or Web3.
For example, the Internet will combine, understand, and interpret data, creating a more transparent internet. Information can be shared simultaneously throughout rather than in one location. This would give users more power over the Internet and a more personalized space for each user.
Through blockchain technology, Web3 would use cryptocurrency and NFTs for peer-to-peer payments and ownership. This is because cryptocurrency is the basis of creating a decentralized internet.
The primary difference between Web 2.0 and Web3 is the ability of private networks to obtain consumer data. Web3 would prevent networks from selling information to marketers and protect information from hackers.
An article titled "Web3 for Dummies" from Techbullion gives a straightforward definition:
"Web3 is the next decentralized internet era, in which consumers can acquire whatever internet service they want without intrusion into their privacy or control from third-party internet service providers."
There are several concerns regarding Web3. According to TechTarget,
Complexity - "Web 3.0's reliance on blockchain, decentralized networks, and smart contracts can make it significantly more complex for the average user to understand than Web 2.0."
Security- "The complexity of these foundational Web 3.0 technologies also makes it a nontrivial challenge for individual users to keep their activities secure, especially in light of widely reported cybersecurity incidents and a growing awareness of the many risks of blockchain applications and cryptocurrency exchanges."
Regulatory concerns - "The lack of a central authority makes Web 3.0 more difficult to regulate. As such, the regulatory and compliance regimes that help to keep online commerce and other web activities safe for users are simply not present -- and if they are present, they aren't effective."
Technology requirements - "The blockchains and distributed applications of Web 3.0 are often resource intensive, which means they won't run well, if at all, on older hardware."
Lack of interoperability with Web 2.0 - "Web 2.0 is largely based on a centralized model, while Web 3.0 is decentralized, meaning web users are likely to continue using both versions for some time to continue benefitting from Web 2.0 applications."
"My AI can answer a burning trivia question, offer advice on the perfect gift for your BFF’s birthday, help plan a hiking trip for a long weekend, or suggest what to make for dinner. My AI is there to help and to connect you more deeply to the people and things you care about most."
The newest Snapchat feature has had mixed user reviews; however, it hints at the future of artificial technology on social media platforms.
Of course, artificial intelligence has been an aspect of social media through algorithms; however, platforms will be creating new ways to incorporate the application. For example, LinkedIn has recently used AI to generate 'conversation starters' for users.
Through AI, such as ChatGPT, social media users can generate posts or create marketing plans. For example, Copy.Ai can help you create a social media post within minutes. This tool helps aid social media managers with a faster writing process and creating engaging posts.
Immersive Technology
As the Metaverse changes the way we view technology, it is also changing the future of social media. After all, the Metaverse is a form of virtual reality where other people can interact in a virtual world. Individuals will be able to interact with people internationally seamlessly and realistically.
It is also speculated that immersive technology will take over social media for younger generations. According to TipRanks, 90% of Generation Z consider themselves gamers, and over half prefer interactive games over social platforms. Through analyzing the habits of young media users, it's evident that immersive media will only become more popular.
The internet is changing through blockchains, artificial intelligence, and immersive technology. Although it is difficult to say whether or not Web3 will be the future of the internet, the future of socialization online will be much different. By analyzing digital trends and inventions, we can predict the future of the internet and technology.
